Katie Medley, 21, gave birth to Hugo Jackson on Tuesday at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, the same hospital where his father, 23-year-old Caleb Medley, lies in critical condition after being wounded in last Friday’s mass shooting at a cinema near Denver.
Watching the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, Mr Medley was shot in the head as he and his wife enjoyed a final date before the expected birth of their first child. Mrs Medley was not injured.
Seth Medley, brother of the victim, told reporters that Caleb, despite being placed in a coma by doctors, had responded to the presence of his new child by “moving his hand toward the baby, trying to feel his son”.
Friends have set up a website to raise money for the couple who do not have health insurance. As of Tuesday morning, over $70,000 (£45,000) had been raised.
