One in six parents do not get school they want

More than 89,000 parents – one in six – missed out on their top choice of secondary school for their children this month, official figures confirmed today.

Government statistics show that 16.8 per cent of applicants in England were not allocated a place for their child at their first choice of school for September. The proportion is the same as last year’s.

There were marginal improvements in the number of parents given a place for their children at their second or third choice.

A total of 5.1 per cent were not allocated a place at any of their three preferences of secondary school, which is similar to last year’s figure.

The fortunes of the 530,000 children seeking secondary school places were heavily determined by where they live, with parents much less likely to get their top choice of school in London or in some areas with grammar schools.

In inner London one in three parents missed out on their top choice of school for their children. In Wandsworth, South London, where competition was toughest, this fell to more than half – 52.3 per cent missed out… Continue reading
