Chris Grayling, the employment minister, yesterday condemned “false” Left-wing groups for whipping up controversy about workfare with accusations that the scheme sponsors “slave labour”.
The programme is descending into chaos as a series of companies — including Tesco, Waterstones, Maplin, Greggs, Poundland, Argos and TK Maxx — review their participation.
The aim of the scheme is to place young people on Jobseeker’s Allowance in work experience for up to eight weeks, but campaigners have complained that some of them are threatened with losing their benefits if they drop out early.
Mr Grayling claimed this was untrue and accused some socialist activists of hijacking the name of his email account to cause trouble with businesses.
“I don’t accept that the scale of the campaign is very large, it’s a small number of activists who are deliberately targeting these companies and trying to destabilise them,” he said.
