Women who put off starting a family into their 40s are 50 per cent more likely to have a child with autism, research has found.

Women are increasingly putting off having children until later in life when their careers are set and their home life is settled.
However, doctors have warned that fertility decreases with age and risks to the child and to the mother increase.
The risk of miscarriage is greater, there is a higher chance of developing pre-eclampsia and Down’s syndrome is more common if women give birth later.
Now scientists have discovered that maternal age is also a factor in autism.
Women’s eggs deteriorate in quality as they get older and they develop more abnormalities which can make it harder to conceive and makes health problems more likely during pregnancy and in the baby.
