University admissions: students being ‘abandoned’

A generation of school-leavers has been “abandoned” by Labour, it was claimed today, as a dramatic rise in university applications threatened to leave hundreds of thousands of students without places.
University leaders said many of the brightest teenagers would be forced straight onto the “dole queue” after demand for courses soared by almost a quarter.
The rise – double that predicted by vice-chancellors in recent weeks – comes despite savage cuts to university budgets and a freeze in the number of available places.
Among over-25s alone, applications are up by almost two-thirds.
If the increase in applications continues until the summer, as many as 300,000 students – one-in-four – will miss out on places.
The disclosure prompted claims that the Government had turned its back on thousands of teenagers.
