Mothers and fathers have never felt more under fire, says Marianne Kavanagh.
Parents are in the spotlight. We have never been so targeted nor so confused. This, after all, has been the decade of huge amounts of legislation based on the idea that good parenting is crucial to children’s wellbeing. Layered on top of all the official advice, like the icing on the cake, has been all the expert instruction in books, magazines, websites and television programmes such asSupernanny. Parenting is a tough job, we’re told, and we need to be educated in how to do it. (Quite soon, like nurses, we’ll need a degree before we start.)
To some extent, we’re our own worst enemies. Few of us listen to those likeTom Hodgkinson, Weekend columnist and author of The Idle Parent, who urges us to relax. We’re an anxious generation of parents who have had smallerfamilies later in life and we focus all our attention on trying to keep our precious few offspring safe.
